All Hustler BTV verticals easily handle full legal limit power with a low SWR. They are constructed from large diameter (1.25") tubing from bottom to top. An exclusive trap coil design wraps around 1 inch diameter, solid fiberglass cores, offering the lowest possible loss and consistent operation on each band.
Here is what other hams say about this antenna.

GREAT ANTENNA |
Time owned: 0 to 3 months |
I have only used it only for 2 weeks. Works great on all bands. I have it mounted 4" above the ground with NO radials. Best vertical I have seen for the money. |

Wish I'd bought it earlier |
Time owned: 0 to 3 months |
After my experience with another vertical, which couldn't stand up to the recent severe winds at Christmas, I had the chance to buy a 2nd hand 5-BTV, and wish I had bought one earlier.
I decided to ground mount it on the 8ft pole that I used for my other vertical, which was located at the rear of my garage, and between my fence, but couldn't work out for the life in me, why I couldn't get the swr down on 10 & 15mtrs.
So I went back to the drawing board, and looked again at the instructions, and also read about it on the internet, and noticed that a smaller pole was used for ground mounting, and thought that this may be why my swr went haywire.
So I got hold of a 4 foot pole, and put it into the ground, with only about 18 inches above the surface, and re-mounted the antenna, about 4 inches from the soil, and re-checked the swr, and was amazed to find that on 10 & 15,it had dropped to 1.2 and 1.5 respectively!!!!!
So after checking the rest of the bands, and being satisfied with an average reading of 1.7,I found myself on 40 metres later on in the day, and worked Izmir in Turkey from the UK, with a 5/+20.Was I impressed!!!!!
I would have to say, that it is on a par with the Diamond CP-6 that a friend of mine has, but the downside to them both, is that the bandwidth on 80m,is so small. However, on the other bands, I would think that you would be hard pressed to find another vertical that will perform like this.
So to sum up:
1)Read the instructions, and take notice of what they say, especially when ground mounting. And do take note of the measurements supplied.
2) Be aware that the bandwidth on 80m is small, so don't go expecting any miracles.
3)When mounting the antenna in what ever configuration suits your needs, as there is a lack of SO239 at the base of the antenna, and the feeder has to be hard wired, make sure that you apply a coat of Copper Slip, or any other type of grease, to stop corrosion of the terminals.
All in all, a superb vertical. |

great vertical |
Time owned: 3 to 6 months |
had mine 6 months now and only use as a temporary antenna
mounted into ground on a 4 ft pole 18" exposed as suggested I know this isn't the best but in my situation it works well
only gripe(s)
1. the screws and nuts were missing for the radials of the capatacence hat
2. the assembly for the 80mtr hat had a spot weld right on the point were the union clip band tightens against the element so made it a loose fitting part this had to be re-made.
3. 20 mtr and 15 mtr traps were not tuned to freq
however with a bit of adjustment and replacement hardware alls fine now and I'm pleased
swr <1:5 on all bands and added a 17 stub which works great all in all a good

Good Ant for the price |
Time owned: more than 12 months |
I have had one for 5 years was a little difficult at first to get tuned in with my Swan 350 but did get the job done. Purchase a second one a year ago and use it with my travel trailer and when out camping set it up and work field day and what ever when camping. Using my ant tuner was a whole lot easier to turn in. The home set up has 2 radials on each of the bands and the Trailer one I only use 20 and 40m for now. It also sets up very fast. I can usually set it up in 10 minutes and be on the air. For the price its a workable ant when set up and should provide years of service. |

Excellent for the money |
Time owned: more than 12 months |
Excellent antenna. I have it mounted on a 25 foot pole attached to the side of the house with above ground radials. Two for each band except 10m which has four. Because of my limited space for radials I could never have got it set up without my antenna analyzer. There are allot of variables with vertical antennas that affect SWR. I've found DX engineering to be the best place for purchasing or finding parts for this antenna.
By the way if your worried about wind survival the antenna will amaze you. It about gave me a heart attack when we got some strong winds off of Lake Superior but it took it. |

Great antenna, Great Price! |
Time owned: more than 12 months |
I bought my 5BTV from a local ham who wanted it out of his garage. I think his XYL was wanting him to get rid of any excess antennas and other gear. I got the antenna for $50 in very good condition with no parts missing, and an extra 80m resonator. It sat around in my father's garage until I moved to my present location 5 years ago. This is a rented house with an extremely small yard, and with power lines on 2 sides (I didn't have much of a choice about location at the time). The antenna is mounted on 20 feet of heavy duty mast, and has 2 elevated radials each for 10 and 15 meters. It has worked very well for me in a location where I have no room or supports for anything but a vertical antenna. I can usually work any station I can hear and usually get them on the first or second call. I have never run more than 200 watts PEP (SSB)and no more than 30 watts for PSK31, and the antenna performs great! I will probably add radials for 20m, 40m, and maybe 80m if I can run them around the house and not have the ends overlap!
If i ever have to replace it I will get another 5BTV!!! |

Still good |
Time owned: 6 to 12 months |
This is my second review because I wanted to comment on 80 meter operation. The 2:1 bandwidth is indeed narrow (50kc or so). A built-in tuner in your rig will extend that somewhat. I get 1:1 in the middle of the resonant point. If I recall correctly the limited bandwidth on 80 is clearly documented in the sales literature. That is just the nature of the antenna design. For me it’s not an issue because I'm 99.9% a CW op. I have mine tuned for about 3.525 Mhz. I've been enjoying much success on the bottom end of the 80 meter CW band working DX with this antenna. Generally if I can hear them I can work them and I can hear them pretty well on this antenna. 40 meter performance is very good and bandwidth is much higher. Given the current conditions/sunspot cycle, having 80 and 40 is a necessity in my opinion. And for my QTH, this antenna is the best way to go because it gets me on the band with a decent signal without all the wire in the air.
This antenna isn't going to outperform a yagi at 50 feet, but if you know what you getting you'll be well pleased, especially for DX. The only negative thing I can say about the antenna is the lack of an S0-239 connector on the base. I didn't like having to hardwire and weatherproof the coax at the base, but its a minor issue really. |

Agree |
Time owned: more than 12 months |
I agree. This is an excellent antenna for any size property. Mine is connected to an auto tuner and I work all five bands, however a tuner is really needed if you want to operate all of 75/80 meters. If you hang out on one frequency like alot of hams do on that band then the tuner is not needed just follow the instructions for the frequency range you desire.
Like most antennas this one is most fun to build and install in very bad weather. When finished there is satisfaction in a job well done with an antenna that will give you years of service. Buy a second one and put away if ever you need to replace the first one.. |

Big Bang for the Buck! |
Time owned: more than 12 months |
After moving and temporarily losing my A4 tribander and other assorted wires I purchased the 5BTV from R & L Electronics. Being a ham since 1981 I always felt I would NEVER own a vertical as everyone griped abt performance and the radial hassles! But this ant was a pleasant surprise. I generally can work all I hear, although not always on the 1st call (running 85-100w). Before purchase I spent time looking at Butternut, Gap and Hy-Gain and I am sure that I made the right choice. This ant is well-made and it needs to be at my NJ shore QTH. It gets quite windy here between the ocean and Delaware Bay!! I initially had this ground-mounted with no radials and it worked ok. At present it has 2 buried radials for each band, and I have noticed a big improvement. I also added 3 guy lines after about 6 months as the winds and occasional icing had me a bit worried. Ant was flexing alot unguyed, but always came out ok. I do recommend guys if you are in a high-wind area. Bandwith on 75/80 is a bit limited but I mostly do cw and can do all I need with my tuner. Instructions are relatively clear and I had no real assembly problems. If doing it again I would probably purchase the radial plate from DX Engineering. Also an SO-239 connector at ant base would simplify hook-up but no real big deal. When compared to others in the performance and price categories, I feel this ant is hard to beat! Give this a try and I think you will be quite surprised as I have been. Now just have to figure how to get back on 160??
PS: I used a sturdy pizza cutter on a wet lawn to get those radials away from my mower. Good luck!

Add 12M/17M to 5-BTV |
Time owned: 6 to 12 months |
I love my 5-BTV with it's associated 72 radial ground field. Performance is outstanding and the antenna looks sleek and handles 1KW. But....I missed 12M and 17M so I added them to my 5-BTV and now have what one might call a 7-BTV with SWR below 1.5:1 on all bands and legal limit ability. Cost is about $10 if you fabricate the plexiglass spreaders yourself. Drawings, swr data, parts list and assembly instructions at this link.

Great Performer |
Time owned: more than 12 months |
I've had the 5BTV for over a year and it's been trouble free so far. Roof mounted on a Radio Shack tripod, unguyed, it survived the winds and rain of Hurricane Stan in Guatemala this fall. I would have felt much better if it were guyed as others have mentioned. I thought I would return to find it blown off the roof, luckily it did not.
Although it does pick up a lot of noise as compared to my 20M dipole, it really puts out a good low angle DX signal. Reports from around the globe have been excellent, particularly on 40M. It also tunes up easily on 12M with an automatic or manual tuner. The BTV was easy and fun to experiment with and tune.
